Plant Pathology

The department of Plant Pathology was established in September 1964 combined with the department of Entomology. Later it was separated as individual department of Plant Pathology in March 1967. The department is offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses for the students enrolled in this university to enrich the students of Agriculture about plant diseases of various crops, their symptoms and integrated plant disease management aspects. The postgraduate programme in Plant Pathology to M.sc(Ag) degree was started in the year 1970-71. At present the department is offering 6 undergraduate courses along with Agricultural Experiential Learning Programme (AELP) specializing in Mushroom Cultivation in which the students learn about spawn production, mushroom production and mushroom marketing and 8 Postgraduate courses.

  • Developed most effective and economical method for the control of late elaf spot of groundnut.
  • Tested bioactivity of newly designed organosphosphorous compounds against whip smut of sugarcane.
  • Identified potential biocontrol agents viz., Trichoderma sp., Brevundimonas bullata, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus subtills and Pseudomonas aeruginosa against mango anthracnose.

Talc based formulations of potential  Bio Control Agents have been developed against mango anthjracnose, stem rot of groundnut,   late leaf of groundnut and  dry root in chickpea.

  • Standardized the isozyme and molecular marker techniques viz.
    •  Lysine-rich cultivars of sorghum
    • Late leaf spot resistant cultivar of groundnut
    • Fusarium wilt resistant cultivars of pigeon pea
    • RAPD, ISSR and SSR markers for drought tolerant groundnut  genotypes
    • RFLP markers for grey leaf spot and anthracnose resistant cultivars of sorghum and
    •  ITS-PCR and ITS-RFLP for the identification of fungicidal tolerant Colletotrichum gloeosporioides causing mango anthracnose
  • Isolated endosperm specific A- Kafirin promoter from sorghum.
  • In Plant transformation Agrobacterium mediated technique in Arabidopsis has been standardized.
